A Massive Global Gathering Begins

Saudi Arabia Takes Extensive Measures to Safeguard Hajj Pilgrims

The annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca has officially begun this Wednesday. In a notable shift, this year’s pilgrimage marks the final summer season occurrence until the mid-2040s—a decision driven by concerns over extreme heat. Authorities remain especially vigilant after last year’s event, during which more than a thousand lives were lost due to soaring temperatures, with forecasts indicating readings exceeding 120°F again this year.

Officials report that over 1,475,000 registered pilgrims have entered Saudi Arabia since Sunday to commence the five-day journey. However, they have also intercepted approximately 270,000 individuals lacking the proper permits. Given that performing the pilgrimage is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for many Muslims—if health and finances permit—the allocation process is tightly controlled by the government on a country-by-country basis, sometimes leaving hopeful pilgrims waiting decades.

The challenges surrounding permit shortages have led to a surge of unregistered arrivals. These individuals are at risk because they miss out on benefits like access to air-conditioned tents and approved cooling centers. Previous incidents, particularly among unregistered pilgrims from certain regions, have underscored the potential hazards during the pilgrimage.

In preparation for this year’s Hajj, Saudi authorities have implemented a range of proactive safety measures. These include the planting of 20,000 new trees, the deployment of thousands of misting fans, and the resurfacing of pilgrimage roads using white materials designed to lower surface temperatures. Moreover, the number of health care professionals on the ground has been increased by 25%, totaling around 50,000 workers, all part of the effort to prevent another tragic outcome.
