Boulder’s Jewish Community in Turmoil After Violent Arson Attack
The local Jewish community in Boulder is reeling from a recent violent incident that has left many feeling isolated and unsafe. Community leaders stress that any form of violence targeting Jews is not only immoral but must stop, urging Colorado to be a place where every Jew can live openly and securely.
Attack Details and Immediate Impact
During a rally held on Shavuot for the release of hostages, participants were targeted with Molotov cocktails thrown by an Egyptian national. In the ensuing attack, incendiary devices set fire to event participants, leaving twelve people with burns ranging from serious to minor injuries, according to the Boulder Police Chief. This incident, part of a global series of events commemorating hostages held for an extended period, has left the community both suffering and frightened.
Community Leaders Speak Out
Brandon Rattiner, senior director at the Jewish Community Relations Council, noted in a live interview that the community now feels increasingly vulnerable and isolated. In response to the incident, local organizations have come together to bolster security and support.
JEWISHcolorado has joined forces with several groups including the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Secure Community Network, the ADL, IAC, RMRC, StandWithUs, and Stop Antisemitism Colorado. Their collaboration aims to provide enhanced safety measures and additional funding to support local Jewish institutions, including preschools, synagogues, and community centers.
Broader Context and Rising Concerns
The attack occurs amid a series of related events in Colorado, including a recent arrest connected with a plot to firebomb a U.S. embassy office in Israel and the killing of two young adults near a Jewish event in Washington, D.C. Such incidents underscore a growing trend of domestic terror attacks targeting the Jewish population, a trend that has alarmed community leaders and security experts alike.
Calls for Increased Security and Accountability
Eric D. Fingerhut, President and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America, described the Boulder incident as yet another example of domestic terrorism aimed at Jews. He urged lawmakers to significantly increase funding for nonprofit security grants and to allocate more resources for additional security personnel at Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers. Fingerhut also called for greater investment in local law enforcement and for a vigorous response in prosecuting hate crimes related to antisemitism.
Other community voices, including Stop Antisemitism Colorado, have emphasized the need for an end to dangerous rhetoric and a united response from both local and national communities. Rabbi Marc Soloway of Boulder, for instance, lamented that many members of Boulder’s Jewish community no longer feel safe or supported—a sentiment compounded by experiences of verbal and physical threats during public meetings.
Solidarity from National Jewish Groups
National umbrella organizations have also strongly condemned the violence. Leaders from groups such as the Jewish Agency have reiterated their commitment to assisting communities facing these challenges. They stressed that now more than ever, it is essential to support efforts aimed at countering hate speech online and holding digital platforms accountable for amplifying extremist content.
Critics have also called on the media to accurately report such attacks without downplaying the severity of antisemitism. Some experts argue that underreporting or sanitizing these events only serves to normalize such hate-fueled violence, deepening the community’s sense of insecurity.
Through coordinated efforts and increased vigilance, local and national Jewish organizations are striving to ensure that Colorado remains a safe haven for all its residents, reaffirming that violence against Jews is unacceptable under any circumstances.
