Greta Thunberg and Her Selfie Yacht Friends Decline Screening of Oct. 7 Massacre Film

Greta Thunberg and Fellow Activists Refuse to Watch Film on Hamas Attack

Activists aboard a Gaza-bound vessel were brought into a screening room upon reaching Ashdod’s port, about 125 miles off the coast. According to an Israeli defense official, the group was shown a film documenting the brutal events of October 7, when Hamas militants reportedly carried out a massacre in Israel. Upon realizing the film’s distressing content, the activists chose to cease viewing it.

An Israeli defense minister explained that the detainees, including Thunberg, were compelled to watch the screening as part of their processing upon arrival. He criticized them sharply, contending that some among the group appeared to overlook the harsh realities of the violence, seemingly giving more credence to those responsible for the attacks than to the victims of the assault.

Thunberg was among those detained aboard the Gaza-bound ship—dubbed by officials as a “selfie yacht”—and later deported on Tuesday. She, along with two other activists and a journalist, agreed to leave the country, with the 22‐year‐old reportedly returning to Sweden via France. Several other protesters who declined deportation remain in custody, with hearings on their cases pending.

Additional footage from October 7 depicted Hamas terrorists forcibly abducting a woman, leaving her bound and injured—a stark illustration of the violence that forms the backdrop of these demonstrations.

The activists maintain that their protest seeks to spotlight a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which they argue has been unfolding since the conflict reignited over 20 months ago following a major Hamas offensive. In contrast, Israeli authorities have long maintained that vessels like these violate the naval blockade imposed on Gaza.

Officials also dismissed the entire episode as a calculated media stunt, noting that various high-profile passengers on board were captured smiling and sharing images on social media. They confirmed that the vessel continued on its course, with the passengers being provided with basic amenities once disembarked.
