French Teen Fatally Stabs Middle School Employee During Bag Check
PARIS — A tragic incident occurred at a middle school in eastern France when a 14-year-old student fatally stabbed an employee during a standard bag screening at the school in Nogent, near Dijon. The student has been taken into custody, and a police officer assisting with the bag checks sustained minor injuries when the same knife was used in the attack.
The stabbing took place at the Francoise Dolto School, where authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation. The gendarmerie confirmed that during the bag check, the student attacked an employee who was responsible for supervising children. In the ensuing struggle, a police officer was also injured while trying to manage the situation.
In response to growing concerns over violence in schools, French officials had recently introduced bag checks in several institutions. During a two‐month period this spring, authorities reported the confiscation of 186 knives and detained 32 individuals, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address school safety.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that the loss of a dedicated school employee is a painful blow to the entire community. He noted that the government is committed to reducing violent crime and restoring a secure environment in educational settings.
Regional Prosecutor Denis Devallois confirmed that the 14-year-old had no previous record. The young offender, who had served as a student representative in the school’s anti-bullying program and was suspended briefly earlier this year for disrupting classes, carried out the attack while officers were performing bag checks near the school entrance. In the aftermath, school classes were cancelled, and professionals are now offering psychological support to both students and staff.
This incident follows an earlier case in April at a high school in western France, where a student stabbed four others—resulting in one fatality and several injuries. In light of these events, government leaders are calling for even stricter measures to combat knife violence in schools.
