Rescued After Nine Days in Dharamsala
A 44‐year-old American-Israeli hiker, Samuel Vengrinovich, was located alive following a week-long search in Dharamsala, India. Samuel, who has been living in Jaffa since immigrating from the United States 14 years ago, went missing on June 6 after leaving his group’s campsite in the Himalayas, leaving all his belongings behind.
A Harrowing Journey of Survival
Separated from his fellow hikers and injured with a broken arm, Samuel was forced to change course. Despite facing extreme conditions without food or water, he persevered on foot for nine days. His sister, Natasha, explained that he resorted to eating insects to sustain himself while following a river in hopes of reaching a nearby village.
Eventually, his remarkable determination led him to safety, and he was subsequently transferred to a local hospital where he is receiving further treatment. Natasha noted that describing his recovery as a miracle does little justice to the incredible challenges he overcame.
Support from Community and Loved Ones
The successful rescue was made possible by the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies and the support of family and friends. Fundraising initiatives helped raise over $65,000 to cover medical expenses, assist the search efforts, and manage travel costs to reunite him with his family.
