University Student Arrested in “Op Pedo” for Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material
A Malaysian university student has been taken into custody after authorities discovered that he had stored no fewer than 5,000 files containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) along with adult pornographic content on his electronic devices. Alarmingly, some of these materials were produced by the 20‑year‑old suspect himself and involved two local child victims.
Details of the Raid and Arrest
The arrest was carried out during a special police operation known as “Op Pedo” on April 29. Acting on information provided in cooperation with a major technology firm, law enforcement officials from the Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children (MICAC) unit, the Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division of Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Johor Police Contingent collaboratively executed the raid in Pasir Gudang, Johor.
Evidence and Findings
Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan of the D11 division explained that investigators recovered a large volume of CSAM and pornography files from the suspect’s mobile phone and laptop. In addition to material downloaded from the internet, there was evidence indicating that the suspect had himself produced some of the illicit content. Notably, recordings showed that the suspect had sexually exploited two of his young cousins—aged four and nine—in separate incidents that reportedly occurred in Selangor, Pahang, and Kelantan.
Legal Proceedings
The mobile phone and laptop were seized under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 as well as Section 292 of the Penal Code. For the possession of CSAM and adult pornography, the suspect, who is facing charges in Johor, has already pleaded guilty and been fined RM5,000. Meanwhile, he was charged in Klang for recording the exploitation incidents at his family residence in Sungai Buloh during the period between 2023 and 2025.
Investigations regarding an incident involving the recording of a child bathing in a toilet at a duck farm in an oil palm estate in Maran, Pahang, remain underway. Likewise, authorities have opened further investigation papers to review offenses that took place at the suspect’s grandmother’s house in Kelantan, covering cases from last year and this year.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have confirmed that separate investigation teams are handling the various cases linked to the content found on the suspect’s devices. The coordinated efforts aim to address and prosecute every facet of the criminal activities, ensuring that all incidents of exploitation are thoroughly examined.
This case underscores the level of determination by Malaysian law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and serve as a reminder of the serious legal consequences faced by those involved in such offenses.
