UK Mosque Attack Sparks Outrage
Surveillance video captured a hate-driven incident in the coastal town of Peacehaven, where two masked individuals attempted to break into a mosque and then set it ablaze. The attack started around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday when the perpetrators doused the mosque’s front door in gasoline before igniting it. The resulting fire quickly spread, causing extensive damage, including the destruction of a nearby car.
Local police described the incident as both “appalling” and “reckless,” emphasizing that hate-fueled crimes have no place in the community. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is being treated as a hate crime, with officials vowing that those responsible will face the full force of the law.
On Monday, a 46-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Police continue to ask for any information or witness tips that could help identify the others involved in the crime.
At the time of the attack, a mosque chairman and another worshipper, both in their 60s, were inside the building having tea. A mosque manager later remarked that the situation could have been fatal, explaining that the attackers appeared determined to inflict maximum harm. The distress was palpable as the chairman was reported to have been trembling, and a neighbor was seen in tears outside the mosque.
British political leaders condemned the attack immediately. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister stressed that assaults against any segment of British society ultimately affect the entire nation, while a senior official urged unity in the face of such injustice. The incident comes at a time of heightened concern over hate crimes in the country.
Security footage clearly shows the masked individuals methodically pouring gasoline over the entrance and setting the structure on fire, underscoring the premeditated nature of the assault. The community is left in shock, and local authorities remain alert as they gather further evidence and testimonies in this disturbing case of hate-inspired violence.
