Islamic State Attack in Damascus Church Leaves 22 Dead
An assailant affiliated with the Islamic State opened fire inside Mar Elias Church in eastern Damascus on Sunday before detonating his explosive device. The attack resulted in at least 22 fatalities and 63 wounded, according to Syrian authorities.
Eyewitnesses reported that a second gunman, who did not detonate an explosive, also targeted the congregation of about 150 worshippers present in the church.
This incident represents the first major operation by the Islamic State in Syria and the first suicide bombing since the fall of the former president, Bashar al-Assad, whose regime was replaced by an Islamist-led government last December. The attack underscores the persistent security challenges in the region.
