Minister Calls for Holistic Self-Improvement on the Islamic New Year

On the occasion of the 1447 Islamic New Year, Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar encouraged Indonesian Muslims to embrace a moment of deep self-reflection and advancement. He urged individuals to focus on enhancing their spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being.

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar, which commences with the month of Muharram, was introduced in 622 CE to honor the Hijrah—the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina. Speaking at a national commemoration event held at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on the evening of 26 June 2025, Minister Umar stressed that the Hijrah is much more than a physical journey. He described it as a transformative turning point symbolizing the passage from darkness into enlightenment.

During his address, he posed a thought-provoking question, asking what value there is in celebrating Muharram if personal qualities are allowed to deteriorate. He reminded the audience that the Prophet’s companions chose the Hijrah as the start of the Islamic calendar, underscoring its enduring significance for Muslims around the world.

The minister also noted that the migration serves as a timeless reminder to continually rid one’s self of negative influences. His remarks were complemented by Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, who echoed the call for moral improvement. Minister Mu’ti emphasized that the spirit of the Hijrah inspires a commitment to virtue, encouraging the public to reject corruption and unethical practices in favor of justice and ethical conduct.

This event, organized as part of the Peaceful Muharram 1447 H program by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, brought together numerous ministers, international diplomats, and leaders from Islamic organizations—each united in the shared aim of promoting positive change.
