Minister Calls for Holistic Self-Improvement on Islamic New Year

Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar, speaking at a national commemoration at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on the evening of June 26, urged Indonesian Muslims to view the 1447 Islamic New Year as an opportunity for deep self-reflection and enhancement across spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions.
The minister recalled that the Islamic calendar, which commences with the month of Muharram, was established in 622 CE to honor the Hijrah—the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina. He stressed that the historic journey of the Hijrah represents more than a mere physical movement; it symbolizes a transformative shift from darkness into enlightenment.
During his address, Minister Umar questioned the merits of celebrating Muharram if it accompanies a decline in individual values. He emphasized that choosing the Hijrah as the starting point for the Islamic calendar underscores its enduring significance for Muslims worldwide. “The Hijrah is about shedding negativity and embarking on a journey toward perpetual improvement,” he explained.
Minister Abdul Mu’ti, responsible for primary and secondary education, echoed these sentiments by urging citizens to reject unethical behaviors and strive for a life marked by virtue. He also called on the community to engage in the fight against corruption, championing social justice as a fundamental goal.
The Islamic New Year event, organized as part of the Peaceful Muharram 1447 H program by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, saw participation from government ministers, international representatives, leaders of Islamic organizations, and a wide range of local officials and residents.
