British-Israeli Soldier Natan Rosenfeld Killed in Gaza

The Israel Defence Forces announced the death of Sergeant Yisrael Natan Rosenfeld, a British-Israeli soldier, during operations in Gaza. The 20‐year-old was fatally wounded in Jabalia while his unit was checking into reports of a concealed explosive device in a building.

Originally from London, Rosenfeld relocated to Israel with his family 11 years ago and was based in Ra’anana before joining the IDF. His untimely death now brings the total number of IDF fatalities in Gaza over the past 21 months of conflict to 441.

This incident follows the recent loss of seven Israeli soldiers when Hamas had previously set up an explosive on a transport vehicle in Khan Yunis.

It is believed that several hundred British citizens are currently serving in the IDF. In September 2023, the UK Foreign Office noted that at least 80 British nationals, considered “lone soldiers” because they do not have immediate family in Israel, were fighting alongside Israeli forces. By October 2023, the Israeli Embassy in the UK estimated that over 100 reservists and active-duty soldiers had traveled from the United Kingdom to support the IDF amid the recent hostilities with Hamas.

Controversies and Allegations

The Israel Defence Forces have faced multiple allegations from international organizations and human rights groups concerning possible war crimes in Gaza. These include claims of collective punishment, targeting of unarmed civilians, assaults on hospitals causing significant casualties, wide-scale destruction of property, and causing disproportionate harm to the civilian population. The allegations have led to investigations by the International Criminal Court over potential acts of genocide.

In response, the IDF maintains that it adheres to international law and refutes the allegations of war crimes and genocide.
