A Tyrant’s Rise and the Seeds of Change
A cruel leader ascended to power, ruling his people with merciless hatred. In one decisive act, he divided the nation into two groups—the favored insiders and those cast aside as outsiders.
For many years, he boasted about imposing his agenda of discrimination and prejudice, convinced of his own success. Yet a revolution began to kindle from the very heart of his land, sparked by someone he least expected.
Some three thousand years ago, Egypt’s ruler became infamous for turning hatred and murder into state policy. Even as he sent his forces across Egypt to slaughter innocent infants, confident that the steady flow of blood would secure his reign, one courageous act defied his edict. A devoted mother from the people of Israel cradled her newborn and, in a moment of desperate hope, set him adrift upon the river.
Ta, Sin, Mim. These are the clarifying verses of the Book. We recite for you the story of Moses and Pharaoh with truth for those who believe. Truly, Pharaoh elevated himself above the people, dividing the land into rigid classes. Among them, he oppressed one tribe by slashing the lives of their sons while sparing their women, for he was indeed one of the corrupt.
And We inspired the mother of Moses, saying, “Suckle him; but when fear for him overwhelms you, cast him into the river without worry or sorrow. Surely, We will return him to you and appoint him as one of the messengers.”
Thus, from the compassionate act of one mother to another’s embrace, the divine plan unfolded. The mighty river carried the infant Musa into the care of Asiyah—the wife of Pharaoh. In that fateful moment, a new bond was formed. Musa gained a second mother, one who did not give him birth but nurtured him from infancy, ensuring he grew into a man of honor, ethics, and an unwavering sense of justice.
And the wife of Pharaoh declared, “He is a delight for both my eyes and yours! Do not kill him; perhaps he will be of benefit to us, or we might even cherish him as our own.” Yet, none could fathom the momentous future that lay ahead.
Within the opulent walls of the palace, Asiyah held her adopted son close, imparting both spiritual wisdom and intellectual rigor to prepare him for the revolution he would one day lead. Surrounded by wealth and the privilege of power, Musa could have easily become a pampered prince, indifferent to the suffering of his people. Instead, thanks to Asiyah’s compassion and guidance, he recognized that his life was meant for so much more than the comforts of royalty.
Perhaps she sat by his bedside in his early years, recounting the miraculous story of how the Nile delivered a basket carrying him into her arms. Perhaps she explained why he looked different from the other children, bearing the distinctive traits of his people, and why fate had kept him safe within the palace while countless innocent lives were lost outside its walls. Each time she gazed upon him, her heart may have ached with the memory of those nearly sacrificed by a brutal decree. In that tender moment when she cradled the child and pleaded for his life, she demonstrated the kind of courage that would forever shape his destiny.
A Lesson in Courage and Conviction
In that singular act of defiance against senseless violence, Asiyah taught Musa what it meant to stand up against injustice. She understood, better than anyone, that a silent and complacent stance from those in power only paves the way for further atrocities. Her indomitable spirit and profound empathy instilled in Musa the strength to later challenge the oppressive forces of his time.
Asiyah was not merely a caretaker; she was a visionary who raised a future prophet. Through her example, Musa grew into one of history’s greatest revolutionaries—a man who would not allow the chains of tyranny to hold back the tide of justice.
Embodying Asiyah’s Legacy Today
In our contemporary world, where destructive forces and despots still seek to subjugate and divide, we are called upon to channel the spirit of Asiyah. It falls upon us—especially as guardians and mentors—to educate our children about the importance of fighting against injustice. The privileges we enjoy carry an inherent responsibility: to oppose and overcome the cruelties that scar our societies.
We must nurture in the next generation a fierce determination to challenge the forces of oppression, to speak out against modern-day tyrants, and to work relentlessly for a world founded on fairness and divine justice. The courageous example of Asiyah reminds us that even the most unlikely acts of compassion can spark transformative change.
And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, “My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise, and deliver me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the unjust.”
By living with steadfast conviction and a deep, burning love for our Creator, we honor the legacy of Asiyah. Our duty is to ensure that our commitment to justice and faith lives on—not only in our own actions but also in the hearts of our children and their descendants.
