Afghanistan Achieves Honey Self-Sufficiency

Afghanistan Reaches Self-Sufficiency in Honey Production

The nation’s Beekeepers Union has announced that Afghanistan now meets its honey demands through local production. During a recent meeting held in Paktia province, union members urged the caretaker government to enhance the marketing of Afghan honey while providing vital support to further boost production.

According to the union, around 8,000 beekeeping farms are operating throughout the country. Shah Jahan Mubarez, the head of the union, explained that if the import of foreign honey ceased, the country could fully rely on its own output. He noted that the continued presence of imported honey stems from the government not being fully informed about the local sector’s capabilities.

Other union representatives emphasized the need for improved market access and the establishment of centralized markets in each province. Aqlbaz Selab from Nangarhar pointed out that dedicated market centers in Kabul and other regions would organize shop distribution and minimize price fluctuations, rather than having various outlets scattered in narrow alleys.

Mohammad Yousuf, a union member from Logar, added that the widespread availability of imported honey from Iran, Pakistan, and other countries has adversely affected the market for domestic products. Local officials in Paktia, however, reassured beekeepers that their concerns would be addressed.

Deputy Governor Inamullah Salahuddin promised that any issues related to the current system, including the visa process, would be managed within their capacity. Likewise, Mohammad Azim Azimi, the head of Industry and Commerce in Paktia, reiterated his commitment to supporting honey production and related sectors.

Recent data from the Department of Agriculture and Irrigation in Paktia reveals that the province is home to 276 beekeeping farms, which collectively produced 250 tons of honey in the last solar year.
