Muslim Pilgrims Commence Hajj Journey in Saudi Arabia
Nearly two million Muslims have begun the Hajj pilgrimage, gathering in Saudi Arabia to perform one of the most significant rites of their faith. The pilgrims are expected to congregate on the plains of Arafat later today for the most essential observance of the Hajj.
Steps of the Pilgrimage
Earlier, the pilgrims circled the Kaaba in the sacred city of Makkah and then proceeded to Mina, marking the initial phase of the Hajj rituals. They spent the night in Mina engaged in prayers and heartfelt supplications, preparing themselves for the upcoming ascent of Mount Arafat – the climax of the pilgrimage.
The Significance of the Day of Arafah
Observed on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah represents the pinnacle of the Hajj experience. Pilgrims gather on the open plains of Arafat, near Makkah, dedicating the hours from noon until sunset to prayer and supplication. This act, known as Wuquf, embodies unity, humility, and complete devotion to Allah.
For Muslims not engaged in the pilgrimage, the Day of Arafah holds great importance. Many choose to fast on this day, as it is believed to cleanse past sins and those of the coming year—a tradition rooted in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.
Attendance and the Essence of Hajj
Saudi authorities report that over 1.47 million pilgrims have already arrived for the pilgrimage, with expectations that the inclusion of local participants will bring the total close to two million. In the previous year, more than 1.8 million Muslims from a wide array of 200 countries participated in the Hajj.
Hajj is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, a duty incumbent on every Muslim who possesses the means to undertake it at least once in their lifetime. The rites involved are deeply symbolic, commemorating the trials of the Prophet Ibrahim and his family, and highlighting core principles of the Islamic faith.
