Damascus Church Suicide Bombing Claims 20 Lives, ISIS Bomber Identified

Suicide Bombing in Damascus Church Leaves Many Dead

A devastating explosion at Mar Elias Church in the Dweila district of Damascus resulted in significant loss of life and widespread injuries on Sunday. Health officials and security sources report that at least 20 people lost their lives while numerous others were wounded.

This tragic event marks the first instance of a suicide bombing in Damascus since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by a rebel insurgency last December. According to Syria’s interior ministry, the assailant was a member of the Islamic State. Reports indicate that he entered the church, opened fire on those inside, and then detonated his explosive vest.

An anonymous security source suggested that a second individual may have played a role in the attack. While state media initially quoted the casualty figures as nine dead with 13 injured, conflicting reports confirm that the overall death toll had reached at least 20.

Live footage provided by the country’s civil defence team, the White Helmets, captured the aftermath within the church, revealing a scene of shattered pews, damaged masonry, and stained floors—a grim reminder of the ongoing turmoil.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who previously led operations against the former regime and now heads a transitional government, has repeatedly vowed to protect minority communities during his administration.

This is an evolving story, and further updates are expected as more details become available.
