Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, recently met with Spanish Agriculture Minister Luis Planas to explore opportunities for deepening cooperation in the agricultural sector. This initiative forms part of Egypt’s broader effort to enhance its ties with European nations and boost the international presence of its agricultural exports.

The bilateral talks were held on the sidelines of the 6th Conference of African and European Union Ministers of Agriculture and Food Security at the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation headquarters in Rome. Delegates discussed strategies to improve food security and promote sustainable agricultural development, with a particular focus on efficient water management and the adoption of modern irrigation systems.

Minister Farouk highlighted the potential benefits of integrating advanced smart agriculture technologies and state-of-the-art irrigation methods through closer collaboration with Spain. He also emphasized opportunities for mutual knowledge exchange along the agricultural value chain, urging greater Spanish investment in Egypt’s agri-business sector.

In his remarks, Minister Planas praised the outstanding quality of Egyptian agricultural products and their growing reputation in global markets. He expressed enthusiasm for expanding trade in agricultural and food commodities between the two countries and extended an invitation to Minister Farouk to visit Spain later in the year, with plans to participate in a major agricultural exhibition in Madrid.

Additionally, the meeting was attended by Saad Moussa, Head of External Agricultural Relations, and Mina Rizk, Egypt’s Deputy Representative to UN Agencies in Rome, underscoring the depth of commitment to strengthening agricultural cooperation.
