Egyptian Scholar Triumphs in Inaugural Hajj Quran Contest
Egyptian scholar Hamada Muhammad al-Sayyid secured first place in a groundbreaking Quran memorization contest held for Hajj pilgrims at the Grand Mosque in Makkah in June 2025.
Organized by the General Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, the event attracted over a thousand participants from around the globe. Pilgrims traveling to perform Hajj were given the opportunity to demonstrate their Quranic memorization abilities during the competition.
As a faculty member at the Faculty of Quranic Recitations and Quranic Sciences of Al-Azhar University in Tanta, Egypt, al-Sayyid earned the top honor in the category for memorizing the entire Quran. Among 18 winners across different divisions, he was the only Egyptian to reach this milestone.
A special ceremony held at the Grand Mosque recognized all the winners, with Sheikh Maher al-Muaiqly, the Mosque’s Imam, presenting the awards on behalf of the presidency.
The contest featured several divisions, including complete and partial Quran memorization as well as a recitation segment. The competition not only celebrated Quranic scholarship among Hajj pilgrims but also emphasized the enduring spiritual impact of the holy text during this sacred journey.
This year’s Hajj brought together more than 1.7 million pilgrims from all corners of the world.
