Hamas Assesses Mediators’ Proposal as Gaza Ceasefire Nears

Hamas Reviews Mediators’ Offer amid Imminent Gaza Ceasefire Reports

July 4, 2025

The Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas is currently holding internal consultations with leaders from various Palestinian groups to evaluate a fresh proposal brokered by Qatari and Egyptian mediators. In its brief statement, Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to countering what it terms “Zionist aggression” while ensuring unimpeded humanitarian aid reaches Gaza. The group indicated that once these discussions conclude, it will formally communicate its final position.

Meanwhile, Israeli sources have reported that U.S. President Donald Trump may announce a ceasefire deal for Gaza next Monday during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Unnamed officials suggest that optimism is growing among Israeli political circles, bolstered by what appears to be progress in prisoner exchange negotiations with Hamas. There is speculation that Hamas could provide a prompt response to the updated offer, potentially leading to “proximity talks” often arranged in Doha. In related remarks, President Trump emphasized his desire to see Gaza’s residents safeguarded, acknowledging the severe hardships the population has faced.

Internal Disagreements

Additional reports indicate that Netanyahu has assured the families of Israeli captives of his support for the mediators’ proposal, expressing confidence that an official announcement will be made soon. Despite this, several complex issues remain unresolved, such as the details of the planned withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the specific zones for such a pullback, the number of Palestinian prisoners to be freed, and the overarching strategy for ending the conflict. An unnamed Arab diplomat involved in the mediation process noted that while optimism is on the rise, last-minute challenges could still impede progress.

Simultaneously, the Israeli security cabinet is convening to deliberate the future course of the Gaza war, amid internal disputes over whether to finalize a deal. Some members insist that Netanyahu is bent on securing an agreement at almost any cost, fearing that the political window may soon shut. Conversely, critics within Israel argue that the prolongation of conflict is motivated by a desire to satisfy far-right factions and preserve his political standing. Since October 7, 2023, the military campaign in the Gaza Strip has escalated into a devastating conflict characterized by widespread destruction, mass casualties, and severe humanitarian distress. Supported by the United States, the ongoing war has resulted in over 192,000 Palestinians being killed or injured, with thousands missing, while a UN-recognized famine continues to threaten countless lives.
