IMA Equips Palakkad Doctors with Pepper Spray for Enhanced Safety

The Palakkad chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has initiated a proactive safety measure by providing its members with pepper spray canisters. Alongside traditional medical tools, these compact devices are set to become a standard part of a doctor’s equipment in the region.

Rising Concerns for Doctor Safety

This step comes as a direct response to the alarming increase in violent incidents targeting medical professionals. Over recent years, several high-profile assaults, including fatal attacks and violent encounters, have unsettled the community. The move highlights the urgency felt by doctors who are increasingly vulnerable to aggressive actions.

Distribution and Future Plans

On Saturday, the IMA distributed nearly two dozen pepper spray canisters to its members, marking the start of a broader campaign to reach all of its approximately 900 members. The association has also placed a large order for additional canisters. However, due to current air cargo limitations, there is an anticipated delay of about one week before the full stock is received.

Voices from the Medical Community

Dr. R. Sathyajith, president of IMA Palakkad, explained that the initiative is meant to ensure doctors have the necessary tools to protect themselves amid rising threats. He emphasized that the distribution sends a clear message to authorities about the need for robust safety measures. Dr. Sathyajith also expressed disappointment with the government’s failure to implement previously recommended security enhancements, such as the installation of surveillance cameras and the appointment of experienced security personnel in hospitals.

Adding to the conversation, C.S. Swapna, a gynaecologist at the Government Medical College Hospital in Palakkad, mentioned that the introduction of pepper spray has boosted the confidence of doctors, especially during situations where security is minimal during nighttime.

Former IMA secretary and orthopaedist Dr. Dilip Kuncheria highlighted the challenges faced by medical professionals, noting that the increasing patient load without corresponding systemic changes has contributed to the strain on doctors. His comments underscore the broader issues in the healthcare system that leave practitioners feeling both overwhelmed and unsafe.
