Jeremy Corbyn Eyes Leadership of New Socialist Party Backed by Independent Muslim MPs

Corbyn Considers Launching a New Socialist Platform

Jeremy Corbyn, an independent MP, has floated the idea of establishing a new socialist party alongside fellow pro-Gaza Muslim independent MPs. The proposed alliance aims to provide a distinct alternative to the current Labour Party ahead of the next general election.

Ongoing Discussions Among Independent MPs

During a recent ITV interview, the former Labour leader acknowledged that he and his colleagues within the Independent Alliance—a group he helped establish last year—are in talks about the possibility of forming a new political party. When asked directly about leading the emerging group, Corbyn left the door open, emphasizing his commitment to serving the public.

A Growing Alliance Focused on Pro-Palestine Issues

The Independent Alliance is joined by four Muslim independent MPs: Shockat Adam, Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, and Iqbal Mohamed. These MPs, who won their seats during recent by-elections by centering their campaigns around the Gaza conflict, form a bloc that now rivals other small parties in Westminster. Together with Corbyn, their numbers equal those of Reform UK and the Democratic Unionist Party, and they surpass the representation of both the Green Party and Plaid Cymru.

A New Direction for the Socialist Political Spectrum

Corbyn, who has served as an independent since his suspension by Keir Starmer in 2020, has long suggested the possibility of reinventing his political platform with a stronger focus on socialist policies. Should the initiative come to fruition, the agenda would center on combating poverty and inequality, while advocating for a foreign policy rooted in peace rather than military action.

Potential Challenges Ahead

Despite the enthusiasm for a fresh political alternative, some observers raise concerns about the implications of realigning the independent Muslim movement under a Corbyn-led banner. His tenure as Labour leader was marred by controversies over his handling of antisemitism claims and his approach to longstanding allies. Critics have argued that his reluctance to confront detractors and his conciliatory manner during internal party disputes undermined his leadership.

Additionally, there is unease that progressive social issues—particularly those related to LGBT and transgender rights—might create tensions within the predominantly Muslim segments of his base, possibly complicating any efforts to forge a unified political front.
