The Harassment Campaign Surrounding a New Mosque Near the Lake District
Plans to build a modest mosque in Dalton-in-Furness, a small town on the outskirts of England’s Lake District, have met with severe harassment from far-right groups. The £2.5 million project is designed to serve the local Muslim community and accommodate the growing number of Muslim visitors attracted to the scenic area.

Escalation of Far-Right Actions
Shortly after construction began, far-right activists launched a series of disruptive protests and acts of intimidation. Around June 20, a group of about 20 demonstrators gathered near the site, loudly opposing the project and directing insults at those present. Some protesters waved provocative flags, including far-right and historical symbols, while organizations known for their extremist views repeatedly visited the location. These groups asserted that the mosque was intended to encourage a surge in Islamic immigration, fueling further controversy.
Confrontations and Extremist Incidents
A political figure from a far-right party visited the site on June 17 and confronted organizers and workers onsite. Videos circulated on social media captured him verbally attacking the project participants by accusing them of betraying their community. In one video, he claimed that the mosque would serve as a conduit for bringing in radical elements, a statement accompanied by inflammatory language invoking conspiracy theories.

Media Misrepresentation and Sensationalism
Some right-wing media outlets have amplified the controversy by referring to the facility as a “mega mosque,” despite its modest scale. Provocative language and exaggerated claims have contributed to a narrative suggesting that the construction is part of an effort to radically transform a traditional community—a narrative that many observers dispute.
Response from the South Lakes Islamic Centre
The initiative is led by the South Lakes Islamic Centre, a charity founded by a group of local Muslim doctors. As the only masjid within a 50-mile radius and with space for around 200 worshippers, the centre maintains that the mosque is simply an addition to the diverse fabric of the region. In a statement issued on June 26, the centre decried the divisive rhetoric, emphasizing that the facility represents unity and inclusion and is not a threat to the local community. The centre affirmed its commitment to fostering community engagement and resilience, even in the face of escalating political agitation.
Online Harassment and Threatening Messages
The project has also attracted a wave of online abuse. The South Lakes Islamic Centre has been inundated with hateful messages and emails that frequently feature crude language and, in some cases, overt threats. On various social media platforms, comments have emerged predicting violent reprisals against the mosque, with some users calling for aggressive actions and using derogatory slurs. These hostile messages have prompted the centre to alert the local police to the growing safety concerns.

Community Reactions and Solidarity
Despite the intense criticism, a significant number of community members and anti-racism activists have shown strong support for the project. A protest in solidarity was witnessed on the day of the far-right demonstration, with participants displaying signs that promoted inclusivity and respect for diversity. Local residents have spoken out against the extremist actions, emphasizing that places of worship are integral to the community’s social and civic life.
There is a growing consensus among locals that the opposition to the mosque is driven by prejudice rather than genuine concerns. With the project scheduled for completion in time for the upcoming Ramadan, the South Lakes Islamic Centre remains focused on creating a welcoming space that embodies the spirit of unity and community cohesion.
