Modi warns of Khalistan threat in UK, urging Starmer to take action

Modi Highlights Khalistan Extremism Concerns During UK Talks

New Delhi: In a recent meeting with UK leader Keir Starmer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns over the misuse of societal freedoms by violent extremist elements, including those tied to Khalistani radicalism. During the discussion, Ministry of External Affairs secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that such radical activities have no place in democratic societies and must be countered through proper legal measures.

Misri noted that in their talks, Prime Minister Modi expressed a firm stance against allowing violent extremism to take advantage of the freedoms inherent in open societies. He stressed the importance of enforcing legal frameworks to curb such abuses on both sides.

The meeting, which also focused on strengthening bilateral ties in the areas of trade, defense, security, and critical technologies, comes amid growing concerns in India about the activities of pro-Khalistan elements in the United Kingdom. These concerns have intensified following an attack on the Indian High Commission in London in March 2023.

The British delegation, which included key business leaders, entrepreneurs, and educationists, arrived in Mumbai shortly after the two nations signed a landmark free trade agreement aimed at boosting market access, reducing tariffs, and potentially doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
