Muslims and Christians Unite to Restore Arizona’s First Mosque Before Summer Heat

Masjid Jauharatul-Islam Receives Essential AC Repairs

A historic mosque in south Phoenix has finally restored its air conditioning system after nearly a year without it, just in time to beat the summer heat. Constructed in 1981 and noted as Arizona’s first purpose-built mosque, the cream-colored, stuccoed brick building near South Mountain and First avenues has long served as a center for Islamic worship.

The approximately 4,000-square-foot prayer hall had endured extreme indoor temperatures during services last summer, with heat soaring above 91 degrees. Generous donations from both within and beyond the community helped cover the expense of repairing all three of its AC units. Since the system’s completion earlier this year, attendance at Friday services has grown noticeably and the mosque has resumed hosting various community events. For instance, more than 100 people gathered to celebrate Eid in early June.

Jameelah Shamsid-Deen, the mosque’s secretary and treasurer, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the wide-ranging support received over the past several months, noting that the improvements have been a significant blessing.

Solidarity and Community Support

A number of supporters have come forward as well, including Rev. Warren Stewart Sr., a retired pastor who presented an award as a symbol of interfaith unity. Shamsid-Deen explained that while most donations came from a generous, confidential donor—honoring the Islamic principle of zakat—the collective effort was vital in overcoming the challenges posed by the heat.

Even during the period without air conditioning, the mosque managed to extend its service to the community by providing meals for 600 people in need during the intense summer temperatures. The Arizona Muslim Alliance also played an important role by connecting the mosque with wider support networks and helping to broadcast its plea for assistance.

With its restored cooling system now in place, Masjid Jauharatul-Islam stands as a resilient beacon of community strength and interfaith cooperation in Arizona, ready to welcome elders, children, and worshippers into a safe and comfortable environment as the temperatures rise.
