Wildfires in Northwestern Türkiye Largely Under Control, Says Agriculture Minister
Türkiye’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı announced on Sunday that the major wildfires along the Sakarya-Bilecik border and in Manisa’s Akhisar district have been largely contained. During a visit to the affected area in Sakarya’s Taraklı district, he noted that both ground and aerial firefighting teams are actively engaged in cooling operations to prevent any flare-ups.
“The blaze along the Bilecik-Sakarya border is now under significant control,” he explained, attributing much of the progress to overnight rainfall combined with the tireless efforts of the fire crews.
Despite challenging conditions, teams worked through the night and managed to construct approximately 58 kilometers of forest roads within six hours. These new access routes were essential for reaching the fire zones, which were complicated by rugged terrain featuring deep valleys and steep cliffs.
In recent days, Türkiye has experienced a marked increase in wildfire incidents, fueled by high temperatures and strong winds. The minister revealed that authorities had responded to nearly 150 fire incidents across the country over the past two days. Additionally, meteorological forecasts warn of continued storm-level winds in the Marmara, Aegean, and parts of the Mediterranean regions, which keep the fire risk elevated.
Investigations into the causes of the fires are still underway. “Law enforcement has already detained suspects, and we are determined to ensure that those responsible face the harshest penalties,” Yumaklı affirmed, underscoring a strict stance against arson.
Officials continue to monitor the affected regions closely while the cooling efforts persist, ensuring that the fires do not re-ignite.
