Pilgrims Seek Redemption and Rest on Mount Arafat During Crucial Hajj Ritual

Muslim Pilgrims Seek Forgiveness on Mount Arafat During Key Hajj Ritual

On Thursday, June 5, 2025, tens of thousands of Muslim pilgrims ascended a rocky hill on the Plain of Arafat near Mecca as part of their Hajj journey. The pilgrims, enduring scorching temperatures above 40°C (104°F), gathered on what is known as the Mountain of Mercy to perform one of the most essential rites of the Islamic pilgrimage.

The Hajj represents one of the Five Pillars of Islam—a sacred duty obligatory for Muslims who are financially and physically capable. During the day of Arafat, worshippers spend long hours in prayer and reflection, seeking forgiveness and drawing closer to Allah. In the midst of the heat, some pilgrims found brief relief by buying ice cream and receiving water to cool themselves.

One of the pilgrims from Yemen, who trekked for four days overland to reach Saudi Arabia, expressed his deep emotional connection to the ritual: “These sacred feelings are the most luxurious and best thing about Arafat. Though the journey was tiring, we came to please Allah and fulfill one of His obligations at the holiest of sites.”

This day holds profound significance in Islam. The Plain of Arafat, mentioned in the Quran, is traditionally recognized as the site where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have delivered his final sermon during his last Hajj. Pilgrims are required to remain at Arafat until sunset, marking the culmination of a day devoted entirely to worship and repentance.

A government spokesperson noted that more than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims were participating in this year’s Hajj, highlighting the global importance of this gathering. Despite the physical challenges posed by the heat and rugged terrain, the profound spiritual experience continues to draw Muslims from around the world to the holy sites of Saudi Arabia.
