ISLAMABAD – In a significant shift for the country’s electricity sector, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has given the green light to do away with the traditional role of meter readers at power distribution companies. Under the new initiative, consumers will soon have access to a digital platform that allows them to record and submit their own meter readings.

The forthcoming application, aptly named “Apna Meter, Apni Reading,” is set to revolutionize the current process, whereby meter readers photograph meters for billing purposes. This change comes in response to numerous consumer complaints over inflated bills and inaccuracies in readings, issues that have long plagued the system.

While the new system will be rolled out across the nation, it will not apply to the jurisdiction of K-Electric. Earlier this year, the LESCO Chief Executive Officer Ramzan Butt mentioned that the company was preparing to launch a mobile app enabling users to log their meter totals. Although technical specifics and app visuals are still under wraps, its release is anticipated in the near future.

The initiative aims to foster transparency and significantly reduce billing disputes, offering consumers a more reliable and accountable method for monitoring their electricity usage. Additionally, in a related development from May 2025, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had already announced a reduction of Rs1.55 per unit in electricity prices nationwide, including in Karachi, as part of the third quarterly adjustment of the fiscal year.
