Microsoft Expands Its AI Infrastructure with a New Nvidia-Powered Factory
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently unveiled the company’s first large-scale AI facility, which is powered by Nvidia technology. With more than 4,600 GPUs and advanced InfiniBand connectivity across Azure data centers, this new deployment highlights Microsoft’s determination to scale its AI hardware and support increasingly sophisticated models.
Scaling Up AI Capabilities
Each of these AI factories features a cluster of over 4,600 Nvidia GB300 rack computers. The systems are also equipped with next-generation Blackwell Ultra GPUs and connected through ultra-fast InfiniBand networking. Microsoft plans to expand its network by deploying hundreds of thousands of these GPUs around the globe. With over 300 data centers in 34 countries, the company claims it is uniquely equipped to handle next-generation AI workloads—including models with hundreds of trillions of parameters.
OpenAI’s Billion-Dollar Data Center Ambitions
In parallel, OpenAI—the company that works closely with Microsoft yet sometimes competes in the AI space—has reportedly invested a staggering sum in its own data center projects by signing deals with major hardware providers. While more announcements are anticipated from OpenAI, Nadella’s recent update emphasizes that Microsoft already has a robust AI infrastructure in place.
