Stepping Forward with Faith, Not Fear

My Stand for Israel and the Hostages

I hold high the image of Daniel Perez, a 22‐year‐old who fell on October 7, 2023, while fighting terrorists. Even now, his body remains held captive in Gaza. My unwavering faith steers me through these tumultuous times. The Hebrew Bible has repeatedly counseled “Do not be afraid,” and it calls each of us to become a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. This is my purpose.

For months, I sensed an undercurrent of hatred and hostile rhetoric seeping from the shadows into our streets, universities, cafes, and media outlets. Yet, yesterday’s events struck me with a profound, personal jolt. In Boulder, Colorado, a terror attack unfolded not far from home but deep in the heart of a free society. A man by the name of Mohammed Solimani hurled incendiary devices at peaceful demonstrators. During a solemn walk to honor Israeli hostages – many kidnapped on October 7, some brutally murdered and others still lost in the darkness of Gaza – he shouted hateful slogans, igniting chaos among innocent participants.

These peaceful activists were not engaged in a protest of aggression. Their steps were measured and deliberate, designed to raise awareness for the plight of the hostages. Every Sunday, with determined resolve, they gather under a banner asking for justice for those whose lives have been stolen.

I join that walk here in Düsseldorf, Germany, side by side with strangers who have become allies. We carry signs, display yellow pins as symbols of remembrance, offer our prayers, and hold onto the memories of the mothers, children, and elderly whose lives have been taken. Yet, beneath the unity and strength, a haunting question lingers in my mind: Could I be next?

The attack in Boulder was no isolated event—it was a reflection of a broader movement. Under the guise of fighting for justice, the “Free Palestine” movement is slowly morphing into a channel for hate. Its voices, which loudly trumpet selective outrage, accuse others while ignoring suffering elsewhere. In their quest to spotlight the wrongs done to one group, they cast aside the suffering faced by countless others around the globe. This selective indignation, stoked by activists with violent tendencies, is unsettling as it spills over into physical violence.

Mainstream media, which once upheld higher standards, now often amplifies half-truths and overlooks the full context of the Israeli struggle. Outlets from across the spectrum have fallen prey to unverified headlines and distorted narratives—further stoking tensions while the true stories remain buried.

Living in a democratic society means having the right to challenge governments and policies. However, when criticism is laced with hostility and demonization, it can easily tip into incitement. For many, standing with Israel is not just about political allegiance; it is about defending a nation under siege, upholding truth, and demanding accountability for acts of terror.

I walk forward with a clear purpose, fully aware of the risks. I wear my Star of David with pride, despite knowing that intolerance may greet me. I pin the symbol of remembrance for the hostages on my clothing, even if it attracts harsh words or even aggression. Every step I take is not merely an act of defiance; it is a commitment to stand by a nation whose people continue to endure both physical and ideological assault.

I cling to my faith as a beacon of hope and strength. Despite the fear and uncertainty of these trying moments, the same divine guidance that once parted the Red Sea continues to watch over the people of Israel. In embracing truth and courage, we do more than protest; we honor every stolen life and every silenced voice.

Now, more than ever, Israel—and the innocent hostages—needs voices that refuse to be intimidated. We are called upon to rise with courage, to speak the truth even when lies are loudly proclaimed, and to stand united in the face of terror. In these moments, silence becomes complicity. Thus, I choose to walk, to speak, and to remain steadfast in my faith.
