Tehran Jewish Committee Asserts Iranian Jews Remain Fully Secure Amid Sanctions and Scrutiny

Tehran Jewish Committee Affirms Unwavering Security for Iran’s Jews

A newly published annual report from Tehran’s Central Jewish Committee asserts that Iranian Jews live in complete security under the leadership of the Islamic Republic. Released on June 6, 2025, the 20‐page document covers the period from March 2023 to February 2024 and provides a detailed account of religious activities, community services, youth education, and property management. The report opens with commendations for the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and reaffirms steadfast loyalty to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Iranian constitution.

Community Life and Religious Commitment

The document emphasizes that the community continues to observe its religious obligations with dignity and full freedom. It outlines a schedule of Torah studies, kosher food supervision, youth sports programs, and elderly care initiatives. Regular participation in state events—such as Quds Day marches—is noted as an expression of unity against Zionism and solidarity with the Palestinian people. Through these efforts, the Committee underlines the idea that Judaism should remain a matter of faith and tradition, entirely separate from any political ideology.

Financial Struggles Amid Sanctions and Inflation

Despite the positive portrayal of security and religious freedom, the report also candidly describes financial challenges. Economic pressure due to international sanctions and inflation has strained community resources. Rising costs have significantly outpaced income from community assets, and over the past year more than 30 billion Iranian rials (approximately $60,000 at unofficial exchange rates) were allocated to welfare assistance. These funds have been used for various support programs, including tuition subsidies, food aid, medical assistance, and housing support for low-income families and senior citizens. The Committee expressed gratitude to several government bodies for their role in upholding the rights and security of the Jewish community.

Preserving Tradition Amid Political Realities

While many aspects of the report mirror the practices of Jewish communities around the world, its political tone remains uniquely tailored to Iran. Strong statements opposing Zionism are balanced with affirmations of loyalty to the Islamic Republic. Experts have suggested that such a stance serves as a survival strategy, enabling the community to maintain its cultural traditions while navigating the complex political landscape of Iran.

The Committee also detailed significant initiatives in cultural and educational realms, pointing to a network of synagogues, schools, sports clubs, youth centers, and the well-maintained historic Beheshtieh cemetery. Recent upgrades at the cemetery, including a new connection to the city’s natural gas system and restoration of gravestones, underscore the community’s dedication to preserving its heritage.

A Call for Continued Unity and Charity

Concluding the report, community leaders urged members to remain united and committed to charitable works. Emphasizing that alleviating poverty and caring for the needy are among the highest forms of service and worship, the Committee called on its members to continue supporting one another and to uphold the long tradition of generosity that has characterized the Jewish community in Iran for decades.
