University Student Detained for Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material
A 20-year-old university student in Kuala Lumpur has been detained for possessing more than 5,000 files of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) along with adult pornography. Authorities believe that some of these explicit materials were self-produced, implicating the suspect in additional illicit activities involving young children.
The arrest was conducted on April 29 in Pasir Gudang, Johor, during a joint operation led by the Malaysian Internet Crime Against Children (MICAC) unit of Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11). The operation involved coordination with Johor police and cooperation with technology companies.
An investigation of the suspect’s electronic devices revealed thousands of explicit files. While many of the files appear to have been downloaded from the internet, others seem to have been created by the suspect himself. Further inquiries uncovered that he had sexually exploited his two young female cousins, aged four and nine, and recorded these acts using his mobile phone.
The recordings were made at three separate locations across Selangor, Pahang, and Kelantan. In light of these discoveries, police have seized a mobile phone and a laptop to further their investigation. Charges have been filed under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 292 of the Penal Code pertaining to the sale of obscene materials.
Separate investigation papers have been opened in the respective states. The suspect was charged in Johor on May 22 for possessing CSAM and adult pornography; he pleaded guilty to those charges and was fined RM5,000. On Thursday in Klang, he was additionally charged for recording explicit acts at his family home in Sungai Buloh between 2023 and 2025.
Another case, involving the recording of a victim while bathing in a plantation toilet in Maran, Pahang, remains under review by the Deputy Public Prosecutor. In addition, the Attorney General’s Chambers is currently reviewing a further case based on recordings made at the suspect’s grandmother’s home in Kelantan during 2023 and 2024.
