Egypt Cracks Down on Pro-Palestine Activists, Halts Gaza Aid Routes

Egypt Enforces New Restrictions on Gaza Solidarity Efforts

Egyptian authorities are intensifying their campaign against pro-Palestinian aid initiatives by detaining activists and restricting entry routes to the Gaza border. Despite Cairo’s public stance in support of the Palestinian cause, recent actions have seen foreign delegations face stringent controls. An official statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs now requires all groups aiming to reach the Rafah border to obtain prior approval through formal channels.

New Entry Protocols Imposed

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that any delegation wishing to approach the Rafah border must submit their requests by contacting Egyptian embassies abroad or through diplomatic missions in Cairo. This measure is aimed at verifying the purpose of each visit and checking the identities of the participants, ensuring that efforts remain strictly humanitarian. The ministry stressed that any attempt to bypass these procedures or pursue objectives beyond humanitarian support would not be tolerated.

Detentions in Cairo and Global Solidarity

Several activists involved in aid convoys have already been detained in Cairo. Among those held are members of separate solidarity campaigns, including the Sumoud Convoy and the Global March to Gaza. Notably, Algerian nationals Mustafawi Samir, Mohamed Atif Briki, and Abbas Abdelnour—each part of a legally sanctioned delegation—had their phones, passports, and official documents confiscated by Egyptian authorities. Activists and campaigners maintain that these individuals were in Cairo solely for peaceful and lawful participation, and view these detentions as both unwarranted and disheartening.

Rising Israeli Demands

As solidarity convoys make their way closer to the Sinai, Israel’s Defence Minister has publicly urged Egypt to halt them completely. Criticizing the participants as dangerous protesters, he warned that any breach risking the security of neighboring forces would not be allowed. In response, convoy organizers have decried such claims as unsubstantiated, emphasizing that the groups include professionals such as teachers, medics, and lawyers. They assert that labeling these humanitarian efforts as a security threat diverts attention from the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

Criticism of Egyptian Measures

While Egypt claims to stand with the Palestinian people, many observers and participants in the aid efforts argue that its actions tell a different story. Numerous checkpoints across the Sinai have impeded progress, with those attempting to reach Rafah without the highest level of clearance facing severe delays or outright detention. Organizers report that instead of providing support, the response from Egyptian security forces has led to further isolation of Rafah – effectively turning the crossing into a sealed gateway much like other controlled borders.

Impact on Gaza’s Humanitarian Situation

Since the outbreak of conflict in October 2023, Gaza has suffered catastrophic losses, with tens of thousands of Palestinians losing their lives. The Rafah crossing, a critical exit point not under Israeli control, has remained largely closed. This has resulted in months-long backups for humanitarian convoys and has significantly hindered aid delivery. Activists accuse Egypt of, in practice, upholding the blockade through these restrictive measures.

Calls for International Accountability

Human rights groups and international advocacy organizations have called for urgent action to scrutinize Egypt’s role in what they describe as a de facto blockade. Global coalitions have demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all detained representatives and insisted that international delegations be granted safe passage to the Rafah crossing without interference. Critics argue that such restrictive steps only intensify the humanitarian crisis and expose the state’s involvement in maintaining the blockade.

Looking Ahead

With convoys from Libya and Jordan still awaiting clearance, the prospects for humanitarian aid reaching Gaza remain uncertain. The sharply divided response — between Egypt’s stated support for Palestine and its restrictive actions — continues to cast a shadow over efforts to alleviate the suffering in the region.
